Audits
Audited financial statements are the product of a CPA’s highest level of assurance services. The CPA performs inquiry and analytical procedures as well as conducting verification and substantiation procedures in an audit. These verification and substantiation procedures may include direct correspondence with creditors or debtors to verify details of amounts owed, physical inspection of inventories or investment securities, an inspection of minutes and contracts, and other similar steps. Also, the CPA gains knowledge and understanding of the entity’s internal control system. When the audit is completed, the CPA’s standard audit report states that an audit was performed according to generally accepted auditing standards, and expresses an opinion that the financial statements present fairly the entity’s financial position and results of operations. The report expresses “positive assurance.”
Reviews
Reviewed financial statements require that the CPA perform inquiry and analytical procedures. Upon completion, a report states that AICPA professional standards have been reviewed. A review is less in scope than an audit. The CPA did not become aware of any material modifications that should be made for the statements to conform to generally accepted accounting principles. The report expresses “limited assurance.”
Form 990 Annual Reporting Forms
Form 990 is an annual reporting return that certain federally tax-exempt organizations must file with the IRS. It provides information on the filing organization’s mission, programs, and finances.
